The role

About Southwark:

Southwark is a large, ambitious and progressive council with a ‘can do’ attitude and enviable reputation. As a council, we are successful, passionate and forward-thinking. We are committed to our ‘Fairer Futures for All’ promise which ensures that our residents and businesses are central to everything we do.

Southwark has a varied mix of cultural communities, where over 120 languages are spoken in Southwark.

The role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Council’s Community & Voluntary Sector Engagement Unit. Your role will be to support the Council’s Empowering Communities Programme.

The Council’s Empowering Communities Programme takes a fresh look at how communities work together and interact with the Council.  It delivers a new way of engaging local people in the issues that affect them at a very local level.

You will develop the work of the Empowering Communities programme within a locality, manage a small grants programme, and support the planning for the annual Empowering Communities Programme conference. You’ll encourage broader ownership of the engagement amongst local residents, businesses and community groups, and encourage greater interaction between the Council and the community, to ensure that local residents are more involved.

Working closely with other officers in the Empowering Communities Programme Team and elected members, you will focus on extending ways in which the Council interacts with its community. To achieve this aim, you will implement a plan with the objective of informing the local community about the work of the ECP.

Key requirements:

You’ll need:

  • to be qualified to NVQ level 3 or above
  • experience of community development work and project management
  • experience of using various engagement tools including social and digital media
  • experience of negotiating with a wide range of stakeholders
  • the ability to gather data, undertake analysis and present findings
  • to be available for occasional weekend and evening work.

Additional details

Please note this role is being offered on a fixed term contract basis for a duration of 12 months.
