The Role:
Southwark manages approximately 90,000 trees in Parks & Open Spaces, Housing, Highways and a small number of schools. There are also 65 sites of importance for nature conservation in Southwark including 7 local nature reserves.
We are currently looking to recruit a Tree & Ecology Manager to build on the achievements of our ambitious, successful Trees & Ecology team, providing our residents with high quality, customer focussed, timely and outcome-based arboricultural and ecological services.
You will have management experience of working within the arboricultural or ecological industry in a similar local authority, and a willingness to undertake continuous professional and personal development.
The post holder will be responsible for the development, delivery and promotion of the council’s strategies related to the safe management and growth and maintenance of the council’s tree stock and enhancement of biodiversity, ensuring that they meet the needs of the all sections of the community, contribute to tackling the climate emergency and support the regeneration of the Borough.
As the Trees and Ecology Manager, you will maintain and develop the service as a centre of excellence, taking the professional leadership role for the Council across these areas.
Key duties and responsibilities
-To lead the team on contributing to the understanding and delivery of all relevant council policies relating to the reduction of inequalities across the borough and embedding all equalities principles and values throughout the service
- Prepares, lets and reviews contract specifications and agreements using the Council’s tendering and procurement procedures and manages the monitoring of contracts against a range of qualitative and quantitative performance indicators
- Provide support and guidance on all Arboricultural and Ecology issues, tree related planning issues and development of joint projects where required. Preparing and present reports or position papers where required to management, councillors or public meetings.
- Management and monitoring of capital and revenue budgets including implementing financial strategies for the service; ensuring resource limits are not exceeded and that corporate standards are adhered to throughout
-Responsible for all health and safety matters within the area of responsibility
- Responsible for the development and delivery of an extensive community and stakeholder management plan that raises awareness of climate issues, encourages residents to become more involved in green issues in their local area and educates residents regarding the action being taken by the council to address the climate emergency and enhance the environment that they live in to improve wellbeing
-Understanding of legislation, standards and professional guidelines relevant to the post
About You:
- The post holder will be expected to have a relevant level 6 qualification in arboricultural, ecological, or a related field, with In-depth experience in an appropriate field that can be substituted for formal qualifications.
-The post is permanent/full-time 36 hours per week.- Will be required to work outside normal office hours, and attend meetings, courses, and events outside the borough.
