The role
About Southwark
Here at Southwark, you can expect a welcoming working environment that is far removed from the traditional ‘stuffy’ public sector image. Encouraged to think creatively, our staff work in a modern office in the heart of London Bridge and are welcome to pursue flexible working. The resulting atmosphere is a cheerful collective of professionals who work collaboratively for the benefit of the local population.
About the Role
Highways capital projects are hugely important to the department. You will therefore manage the funding (including assessing whether they’re feasible and cost-effective), and will gauge support from the community via consultation processes. Developing and assisting in the management of larger projects, you will also provide expert opinion on community engagement.
Balancing the competing needs of various projects you will oversee a £1 million portfolio of projects. Southwark is currently undergoing a dramatic period of transformation. Benefiting from a multi million £ regeneration that will see new homes being created, facilities being improved and transport being enhanced, the local communities who populate this densely inhabited area are already enjoying the dynamic changes afoot. A key part of these works falls within the remit of the Highways Team, who oversee every element of the roads, footpaths and cycle routes that connect this busy corner of London to the rest of the capital city.
Taking responsibility for a broad cross section of highways capital challenges, you will oversee the initial progression of the projects, from first inception through to developing the idea, engaging the community and reaching outline design phases. Securing funding for these concepts, you will draft reports, project briefs and tender documents, making recommendations for how the council’s priorities should be balanced. You will also manage contractors and consultants who have been entrusted with technical design. Applying quality management systems to all projects, your £1 million portfolio will provide value for money, as proven by your detailed financial returns.
About You
Coming from a construction or highways background in which you delivered complex capital projects, you will ideally have a degree-level qualification in engineering, transport or project management. With good financial and cash flow capabilities, you will be experienced in handling contractors and engaging the community, and your communication skills will prove invaluable.
If you have the relevant experience and you think you could contribute to our enthusiastic team environment, then we’d be delighted to hear from you.
