The role
The Role:
To help contribute to the maintenance and installation of street furniture across the Borough. This role interfaces not only within Southwark but other public bodies and regularly collaborates with third party contractors and stakeholders.
The role is integral to ensuring compliance for the council and reducing risk in regards to liabilities from damages or claims within the highway
The Street furniture team silts within the public realm delivery team, whom are responsible for ensuring front line services are delivered safely and in a timely manner. Ensuring works are completed right first time. The team sits within the wider Business unit of Asset Management Services, which also contribute to Street Lighting reactive services along with manufacturing at the depot. The Business unit is unique in the way we trade and look to promote efficiencies and advances in technology to help assist the boroughs residents and visitors.
- To ensure all works are carried out in a timely and safe manner.
- To challenge poor practices and discrimination in the workplace.
- To maintain a level of knowledge and competence that will allow you to fulfil your duties to the role and tasks.
- To carry out reactive works in a calm and controlled manner, where risk based approach is needed.
- To provide knowledge, understanding and execution of installation, repairs and maintenance, inspection of equipment of operational buildings, furniture, features and fittings within the Public Realm including highways, parks, open spaces and housing managed land and infrastructure.
About You:
We are looking for motivated individuals that have a strong knowledge of the Health & Safety at Work Act as well as best practices and method statements in regards to this role.
We are looking for an engaging individual that is able to communicate openly and challenge where necessary, whether that is against bad practises or discrimination in the work place.
The individual needs to be familiar and capable in operating hand held and power tools/plant relevant to this role.
A basic digital competency of handheld devices and mobile technology will be needed as we strive to become a paperless workforce and reduce our impact on the environment.
Additional Information:
- The role will be working within the highway and in all environments/seasons
- 36 hours Monday - Friday
- 8 Month Fixed Term Contract
- Will be required to carry out physically demanding tasks

Please note this role is internal only – as such, we can only accept applications from current Southwark employees or agency workers who are currently on active assignment at Southwark Council.
Please note this role is being offered on a fixed term contract basis for a duration of 8 months.
