The role

About Southwark:

Southwark is a large, ambitious and progressive council with a ‘can do’ attitude and enviable reputation. As a council, we are successful, passionate and forward-thinking. We are committed to our ‘Fairer Futures for All’ promise which ensures that our residents and businesses are central to everything we do.

You will be joining a busy and supportive team of property and planning lawyers working together to provide legal advice relating to major regeneration and redevelopment projects.

The role:

The pace of change within the Borough of Southwark over the past few years continues. The Borough includes several landmark buildings including Southwark Cathedral, Tate Modern and the Globe theatre. Extending from the river Thames in the North to Greenland dock in the East, near Waterloo Bridge in the West and Camberwell, Peckham and Dulwich in the south this is a culturally and socially rich and diverse area. The redevelopment of areas such as Canada Water and Elephant & Castle is evidence of the rapid progression. There are ongoing major projects such as the regeneration of the Aylesbury Estate which will require significant legal input.

An opportunity to join the team has arisen for a period of one year to cover the workload of a senior team member. The role includes advising on complex development schemes and projects including Compulsory Purchase, as well as more routine property law work such as acquisitions and disposals and leases. All of the Council’s legal work is carried out within the framework of Local Government law and good governance is crucial to the Council’s work at all levels.

About you:

We are looking for a technical expert who will act closely with colleagues and clients on some of the Council’s major redevelopment projects, including Compulsory Purchase. You will be a qualified solicitor or barrister with significant property and redevelopment law experience, confident enough to work without supervision but as part of a team where necessary. You will ideally have Local Government experience or knowledge. You will have the expertise to advise on complex areas of law and the ability to communicate well with other professionals as well as with lay people.

Benefits and more information:

From flexible working to job sharing (where possible) we are committed to providing a healthy work life balance. You will benefit from 33 days basic annual leave (plus bank holidays), rising to 36 days with continuous service, a generous local government salary related pension, cycle to work and cycle loan scheme, season-ticket loan, confidential wellbeing and counselling support. For more information about the wide variety of benefits you can take advantage of please visit our Staff Benefits page.
