Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is £56,271 - £69,990
The Role:
You will join a team of well-rounded lawyers providing high quality legal support to the council on a range of issues. As our go-to expert on governance and public law, you’ll use your specialist knowledge to advise a variety of decision makers, up to the Chief Executive and the Council Leader. This could be at committee or Cabinet. In this role you will be advising on constitutional matters including Member interests, Code of Conduct and council procedures. You’ll also offer guidance and support to other members of the legal team on governance issues. Managing a team including a governance lawyer and corporate information governance specialists, this diverse role will require developing strong working partnerships both inside and outside the council, as well as keeping up to date with changing legislation.

About You
You will be a highly experienced solicitor, with an extensive record of handling complex high value and/or sensitive litigation cases and managing risk. You will have an in-depth knowledge of council decision making procedures and powers. You will also have extensive knowledge of law relating to freedom of information and GDPR. In addition you will have experience of advising council committees, handling Member complaints and how council constitutions work. With an understanding of the political sensitivities of our work and an understanding of governance, you’ll be aware of the impact your advice could have for both the council and the communities we serve. This means you’ll have the ability to develop good working relationships with people both inside and outside the council and to explain complex legal concepts clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. You will have the ability to manage and develop other lawyers.
