The role
About Southwark
Southwark is a large, ambitious and progressive council with a ‘can do’ attitude and enviable reputation. As a Council, we are successful, passionate and forward-thinking. We are committed to our ‘Fairer Futures for All’ promise which ensures that our residents and businesses are central to everything we do.
The Role
Building on Southwark’s commitment to promoting ongoing learning and development for social workers, this is an exciting opportunity of a 12-month secondment within a dynamic learning environment.
Keeping Families Together is a specialist systemic team embedded within Children’s Social Care. The primary aim of the team is to prevent family breakdown, working with families where there is a young person between 11 and 17 who is at risk of coming into care, or is in care with the possibility of being rehabilitated home. Using multi-modal interventions, the unit works collaboratively with service-users to enable change so that young people in Southwark remain safely with their families, rather than going into care. The work derives from a clear process of systemic analysis of the problem, and is overseen by a Team Manager within a small tightly supervised unit, with a range of skills and intervention approaches including clinical and family practitioner support.
We offer families intensive support focused on a single set of goals agreed collaboratively with the family and other stakeholders. Whilst in every case our aim is for young people to be able to remain at home with their families without statutory intervention, we also recognise that for some young people our work may highlight that it is not safe or in their best interests for this to be the case. In any event, we are consistently working towards stability for the family after our work is completed, delivering the best that social work can offer, working in partnership with families and professionals to achieve the best possible outcomes for young people in Southwark.
