About the Role
We are looking for someone to join our busy and high-performing team as a Registration and Ceremonies Officer. Registrars are responsible for the registration of all birth, death, marriages and civil partnerships and for conducting ceremonies that take place in the borough of Southwark.
We respond to what can be quite complex enquiries ranging from immigration status, the legal requirement of getting married in a church, civil ceremonies approved venue, abroad and end-of-life unions.
Southwark registrars are renowned for going the extra mile and ensuring that the customer is always at the heart of what we do.
The purpose of the role is to provide timely and accurate registrations according to the statute.
The registration of Births, Deaths Marriages and Civil Partnerships may be used to establish family links or for official and legal purposes. Civil registration data also contributes to providing information about the nation’s health and population.
As a registration officer, your duties and responsibilities are primarily set out in the Registration Acts or contained in instructions from the Registrar General.
-You will be expected to register birth, deaths and marriages and civil partnerships
-Attest notice of intent to marry or form a civil partnership
-Officiate ceremonies
-Certificate production
-Help in driving the public protection and counter-fraud agenda for Civil Registration by supporting the General Register Office and Home Office
-Conduct administrative tasks
-Report statistical information to appropriate organisations
-Manage and respond to complex customer enquiries, corrections, and re-registrations, liaise with the Coroner's Office and ensure registration paperwork is completed to allow marriages, civil partnerships and death registrations to take place.
-Conducts ceremonies

In delivering registration services, you will make an important contribution to the government’s public protection and counter-fraud agenda and play a key role in maintaining the integrity of civil registration services in England and Wales.

About You
A good level of general education is required including clear and accurate handwriting. Some registration experience would be useful but not essential. You should have experience of working in a customer service environment and dealing with members of the public face-to-face, by phone and by email. The ability to relate to people from all backgrounds and cultures. Tact, patience and empathy when dealing with people at an emotional time in their lives. A good level of IT and general admin skills. Strong presentation skills. The ability to understand and apply rules and legislation. To be able to work flexibly across a range of duties to meet customer and service demands and manage time efficiently to ensure a positive and highly productive work output. Be able to work without direct supervision in an efficient, professional and responsible way. To organise and undertake work in a methodical manner, whilst dealing with queries. To be able to learn complex information quickly and put it into practice with speed and accuracy on a daily basis. Work under pressure use your initiative, particularly under pressure; be able to work as part of a team. Attention to detail is an essential requirement. Qualifications: A good level of general education (e.g. 5*GCSE grade A-C to include English and Mathematics)
Hours of work: 36 hours Monday – Friday. Some weekend and bank holiday work will be required on a rota basis
Type of contract: Full-Time Positions. Please note there is 1 permanent and 1 fixed-term position
