The role

Do you want to drive health improvement in a dynamic public health team, serving an exciting and diverse inner London borough? If your answer is yes, then we would like to hear from to you.

As part of our commitment to develop the public health workforce, Southwark Public Health Directorate is offering a number of new entry-level training opportunities as part of its Public Health Foundation Programme. The programme is aimed at new graduates with limited work experience who are considering a postgraduate degree or career in public health. We will be recruiting two Public Health Programme Assistants to join our multidisciplinary and ambitious team of 30 experts. This is a fixed-term placement of six months at three days per week. Flexible working is supported.

The Foundation Programme allows Public Health Programme Assistants to explore a career in public health, develop skills relevant to public health practice and gain experience working in a local government setting. The positions will be closely supported by a public health policy officer or intelligence analyst and will focus on the Covid-19 pandemic response and wider determinants of health.

You will have achieved or be working towards a degree in public health or a related discipline, be a skilled communicator with good analytical skills, and have the ability to work cooperatively.

We will be holding an information session about the programme on Monday 13th September at 6pm.

Join this information session if you want to:

  • Learn more about the role and what the programme entails;
  • Hear from a colleague who has been through the Public Health Foundation Programme recently;
  • Get some tips on writing a good application, and;
  • Have an opportunity to ask questions.

Click here to register via Eventbrite and we will send out a link to the online meeting in due course.

For further information about the programme, please read our frequently asked questions, which are also attached to this advert. Further information on the work of the Public Health team in Southwark council can be found on our Joint Strategic Needs Assessment website.

We reserve the right to close this placement advert before the specified date. The interview will take place via video conference.

Successful candidates should be able to start within 2 weeks from their formal appointment.

The current expectation is that they will work exclusively from home until the Council’s offices will reopen to staff and members of the public.
