The Roles

Southwark Council’s Public Health Division is advertising for two permanent policy officer roles. The job description and person specification is the same for both roles, although one will lead on healthy communities and the other will lead on sexual health and digital public health.

Both roles will involve working across the Public Health Division, wider council, NHS, and community partners in the provision and improvement of public health services.

You must have excellent communication, partnership, analytical and report writing skills. You will be highly organised and be comfortable working within a fast paced and reactive environment, where the focus is on the delivery and management of multiple programmes and projects to high standards within tight timescales. A strong commitment to addressing the wider determinants of health and to tackle health inequalities is expected. 

Both roles in addition to their specific portfolio’s will also be required to support Southwark’s Pandemic Response to work with us in tackling COVID-19 and supporting our plans for recovery and renewal.

Policy Officer: Sexual Health and Digital Public Health

 

This role will be accountable to the Public Health Head of Programmes for Digital Public Health within the Behavioural and Digital Health Team, and work in a matrix to the Head of Programmes for Behavioural Health and 0-19s who leads on Sexual Health. This role will be split working across both portfolios.

Sexual Health: Southwark has amongst the highest sexual health and HIV need in the country. Working closely with teams in Lambeth and Lewisham, you will play a crucial role in managing our innovative commissioned sexual health services, monitoring the implementation and impact of our 2019-24 sexual health strategy, supporting transformation in the local system, and influencing the development of digital sexual health interventions.

Digital Health: Southwark has an ambitious digital transformation agenda. In public health, we want to be at the forefront of using digital technology to improve the reach and impact of our services, and drive down health inequalities. We have projects underway in sexual health, mental health and healthy lifestyle behaviour change. This role will support the development of these innovations and transfer them across into business as usual.   If you have an interest in behavioural science, digital service design, and service transformation then this is the role for you!

Policy Officer: Healthy Communities

 

This role will be accountable to the Public Health Head of Programmes for Place, within the Place and Health Improvement Team

 

This is a varied, interesting and fulfilling role that involves leading on strategic pieces of work including Social Regeneration and the Health Inequalities Framework for the Public Health Team. Through this role you will gain comprehensive experience of working independently on politically complex projects within an enthusiastic and high functioning public health team.  The post-holder will work in a fast-paced, outcomes focused environment to lead on and input into major policies and programmes. 

You need to have an in-depth understanding of the wider determinants of health and  a strong commitment to tackling health inequalities to be successful in this role.
