The role

About Southwark:

Southwark is a large, ambitious and progressive council with a ‘can do’ attitude and enviable reputation. As a council, we are successful, passionate and forward-thinking. We are committed to our ‘Fairer Futures for All’ promise which ensures that our residents and businesses are central to everything we do.

Southwark has a varied mix of cultural communities, and over 120 languages are spoken in Southwark. We have all the challenges you would find in any inner city area.

The Role:

This role is for a full time Principal Environmental Protection Officer in the Environmental Protection Team, within the Commercial business unit of Regulatory Services initially on a 2 year Fixed Term Contract.

Southwark has a solid reputation in the field of environmental protection, with political buy-in and support for mitigating environmental risks to people in Southwark.

Key duties and responsibilities:

You will play a key role in maintaining and advancing Southwark’s status as leading London authority in environmental protection, by managing environmental risks from Part II permitted processes, construction site noise vibration, dust and air pollution, as formal consultee on noise, air quality, and contaminated land on planning applications, and as responsible authority for the prevention of public nuisance on licence applications.

You will have responsibility for a geographical area of the borough, and will provide assistance where required to the noise and nuisances team on technically complex noise investigations.

You will assist on pan-London and cross borough air quality projects including enforcement against sales of unauthorised domestic solid fuels, anti-idling, and non-road mobile machinery.

You will be expected to maintain and update your knowledge of environmental protection through continuing professional development.

You will be based at our Tooley Street offices, but may also be required to work from any other council site, or work from home, depending on circumstances.

In the case of disruption to normal operation of the council, you may be required to be temporarily re-deployed to other activities, as your head of service may direct.

About You:

We are looking for the following experience and skill sets:

We require a highly skilled, well experienced, competent and professional officer to work on environmental protection casework.

You will have a strong background in environmental protection or environmental health, and a good understanding of air, water, land and noise pollution, and the regulatory framework for local authority action to mitigate pollution, and of the reporting mechanisms to the GLA and government.

You will be well organised, comfortable writing reports, attending meetings and court hearings, and giving evidence.  You will be able to present ideas and data in a wide variety of formats to project boards, stakeholder groups, external bodies, and to senior officers and councillors.

You will be able to travel around the whole borough as part of your duties.  You will have good Word and Excel skills sufficient for the discharge of your duties.

Additional Information:

  • Qualifications: you will have a suitable diploma or degree relevant to environmental protection work or equivalent qualifications and/or experience
  • Standard hours of work are 36 hours Monday – Friday, however some evening and weekend work may be required, for which Time Off in Lieu will be given
  • 2 year fixed term contract
  • This post is suitable for internal secondment. If applying for this post as an internal secondment, you must negotiate arrangements for return to your current post, before accepting an offer of this post.

Additional details

Please note this role is internal only – as such, we can only accept applications from current Southwark employees or agency workers who are currently on active assignment at Southwark Council.

Please note this role is being offered on a fixed term contract basis for a duration of 24 months.
