The Role

Regulatory Services Housing Enforcement: Southwark Council is committed to safeguarding the community and ensuring a safe, healthy, and compliant housing. Our Private Sector Housing Enforcement Team plays a vital role in maintaining and enhancing the borough’s living standards through education, engagement and rigorous enforcement. The team is also responsible one of the largest discretionary licensing schemes in London.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Acting as a specialist in housing enforcement, using your expertise to handle complex cases and mentor team members.
  • Investigating housing complaints, conducting inspections, and ensuring compliance with the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS).
  • Leading enforcement actions, from issuing notices to preparing legal cases and providing expert evidence in court.
  • Building partnerships with key agencies, including the Police, Fire Brigade, and HMRC, to tackle housing challenges collaboratively.
  • Supporting the development of enforcement officers and contributing to strategic improvements in the team.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A strong background in private sector housing enforcement and licensing, with at least two years of post-qualification experience.
  • Expertise in managing complex caseloads and enforcing housing legislation.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to engage with diverse stakeholders and present findings effectively.
  • A proactive and innovative mindset, with a focus on delivering high-quality services to residents.
  • A passion for mentoring and supporting colleagues, fostering a collaborative and inclusive team culture.
