The role

About the Role:

In May 2022, Southwark residents elected the largest Labour Group of Councillors in 40 years, on a manifesto to transform our borough and deliver a fairer, greener, safer future. We are now embarking on an ambitious and radical agenda, through both our Council Delivery Plan to 2026 and as we begin Southwark 2030 – a major programme to bring major organisations, businesses, charities and voluntary groups together to develop a clear, long-term vision for Southwark.

And now the Leader of Southwark Council and the Labour Group of Councillors are looking for a new Political Officer to support this exciting work.

The new Political Officer will join the Group at the earliest stages of this new administration, supporting Councillors, the Cabinet and the Leader as we navigate an increasingly challenging national political environment. You will help us shape and build on our nationally leading policy platform and deliver on the commitments we have made residents.

We are seeking a creative political thinker, able to see the bigger picture and think strategically into the long term, and also respond to challenges as they emerge week-to-week. This will include drafting proactive content, reactive media responses and building the effectiveness of the Group’s online communications channels.

About you:

The ideal candidate will be a quick-thinker, a willing team member and able to adapt to changing priorities on a daily basis. They should be able to work with the utmost discretion and with a good awareness of political sensitivities. We are looking for applicants who can prioritise competing workloads and remain flexible with a level head when under pressure. You must be a confident communicator, able to liaise with politicians, senior officers and a broad range of external partners.

The candidate will be a consummate organiser, able to balance numerous administrative and procedural priorities while offering tailored support to individual members where necessary.

This is an incredibly important role, which is crucial to Southwark Labour Group’s plans to deliver for the residents of the borough.

About Southwark:

Southwark is a large, ambitious and progressive council with a ‘can do’ attitude and enviable reputation.  As a Council, we are successful, passionate and forward thinking. We are committed to our ‘Fairer Futures for All’ promise, which ensures that our residents and businesses are central to everything we do. If you want to make a difference at a local level, apply to Southwark Council today.
