The role

About Southwark:

Southwark is a large, ambitious and progressive council with a ‘can do’ attitude and enviable reputation. As a Council, we are successful, passionate and forward-thinking. We are committed to our ‘Fairer Futures for All’ promise which ensures that our residents and businesses are central to everything we do. If you want to make a difference at a local level, apply to Southwark Council today.

The Role:

We are seeking NQSWs  to undertake their ASYE in the Assessment & Intervention Service, who have the professional potential and personal attributes that our children, young people and families deserve.

This is an exciting service to start your career in as you will be exposed to a wide range of cases where you can apply and develop your theory, knowledge and experience. There will never be a quiet moment as you will respond to referrals that are progressed to you from the MASH Service requiring you to gain the voice of the child or young person, assess parenting capacity and identify support needs and safety plans with partner agencies to ensure the right support is put in place to enable our children and young people to achieve good outcomes.

About You:

We are looking for Social Workers to start their ASYE in the Assessment and Intervention Service in Spring 2022.

You will gain proficiency in working at both the child in need and child protection level, develop strong threshold application and you will also be able to shadow court cases and gain awareness of the corporate parenting role of the local authority. Our service is always thrilled to have newly qualified social workers on board, supporting the next generation into their careers and beyond, putting in place the foundations to achieve excellence in practice. We look forward to hearing from you.

As a NQSW, you will have:

  • 1-1 support and mentoring from our two Professional Educators, who support all aspects of your learning journey, including your portfolio, and ensure you have a wide range of appropriate learning opportunities and high support
  • Monthly developmental days, providing additional quality training from experienced specialist staff, facilitated reflection space, and peer learning
  • Fortnightly reflective Action Learning Sets
  • A guarantee of at least 6 further days training in systemic practice, restorative and attachment-informed approaches, with much wider training also available.

As a social worker choosing Southwark you will benefit from:

  • Small teams with high managerial support – a lower ratio of workers to managers than most authorities. Regular group supervision and 1-1 supervision
  • Access to further support and targeted specialist interventions from systemic practitioners and psychologists, embedded within teams
  • Low caseloads below the national average, and administrative support, to help you spend more time with families
  • A competitive salary, generous holiday allowance, good pension scheme and flexible working
  • Ongoing training and a range of career development opportunities, including Consolidation, and the Foundation Year in Systemic Practice for those who continue their career in Southwark

If you would like any further information, or have exceptional circumstances in not previously progressing the ASYE please email CandFASYE@southwark.gov.uk.
