The role
Southwark’s Libraries & Heritage service delivers on the council’s commitment to place residents at the heart of everything we do. The library service promotes reading, learning and inclusion through provision of books and other resources to all in the community through its network of 12 libraries. We are recruiting for a Library Development Officer (Childrens and young people).
We are looking for a great communicator to promote services with a focus on reading and literacy to children and young people. Southwark is a diverse borough with a growing population and we would like a member of staff who is able to work with everyone.
This role includes planning and running Bookstart session, visiting children’s centres, schools and other community venues as well as working in the library which will include duty managing duties, you’ll work closely with a range of other agencies while measuring the impact of your work while encouraging children and young people to enjoy reading before they attend primary school and beyond.
The role requires a commitment to the council’s promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion and involves contact with other library staff and all sections of the community, including young children, teenagers and people from different cultural backgrounds and with varying disabilities.

About You:
We’re looking for a confident and skilled person who can bring us the initiative to work without constant supervision, plus experience of working with children and young people.
Additional Information:
- Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the community.
- Competent in using IT applications for learning and enquiry handling
- Ability to plan and deliver events and activities within library and heritage service to a wide range of users including adults with learning needs, children and families.
- Ability to work effectively on own initiative and without constant supervision.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of the staff team and deliver work to agreed targets and deadlines.
- Two permanent 18 hours per week posts. (Job share 36 hours)
- Evening and weekend working.
- DBS required.
