The Role:

Leisure Services – Leisure Team Apprentice

We have just taken full management of our Leisure and Sport facilities in-house, so we have the ability in the future to directly impact the health and wellbeing of Southwark’s communities. But before we can execute our ambitious plans, we need to recruit and develop a team of talented people. That’s where you come in.

This will be a great opportunity to get yourself on the ladder towards an exciting career in leisure operations (including Lifeguarding), swimming teaching, gym instruction and group activity leadership.

You will undertake the Level 2 Leisure Team Member Apprenticeship which will provide a great opportunity for you to make an impression and establish yourself in the leisure Service team and help establish Southwark Council amongst the best public leisure services providers in the UK.

You will be given the opportunity to work in all areas of the service, covering; operations, lifeguarding, fitness instructing, swim teaching and obtain nationally recognised qualifications which are transferable to many jobs in the leisure and coaching sector. You will spend four days a week in the operation working alongside other colleagues and one day a week in a training environment developing your knowledge and recording your progress.

You will be supported throughout your programme by our Apprenticeship support team, Leisure Services Learning and Development Partner, your site General Manager, your Line Manager, a professional tutor from our learning partner, Creative Sport and Leisure (CSL) and your colleagues on site.

You will be based at one site, although with some rotation around at least 1 other centre, and will be supported with a personal laptop and access to a full range of learning resources.

About You:

You will be passionate about working in a leisure environment, strong observational skills, a good communicator and willing to deliver high standards of work.

You will be undertaking manual work, training to save lives in a pool environment and helping people get the best of our fitness facilities. You will need to be active, in good health and a strong and confident swimmer. If invited to the assessment centre you will be required to complete a swim test as part of the process and you must be able to demonstrate that you can as a minimum complete the following:

- Jump/dive into deep water

- Swim 50 metres in no more than 60 seconds

- Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back

- In deep water, tread water for 30 seconds

- Surface dive to the floor of the pool (deepest part)

- Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where pool design permits

Lifeguarding requires high levels of concentration in a challenging environment, other times you will helping maintain high levels of facility presentation or you could be teaching a group of children how to swim. The day will be varied and demanding, but you should complete the apprenticeship with a sound understanding and qualifications to work in all areas of leisure.

You do not require any formal qualifications to start the Apprenticeship. You will be working within an operational work pattern, including early starts (0600), finishing later the evening (2200) and some weekends.
