The role
Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is £40,005 - £46,053
The Role:
The pace of change within the London Borough of Southwark over the past few years continues at considerable speed. The Borough includes several landmarks including the Southwark Cathedral, the Tate Modern, and the Globe Theatre and enjoys a unique cultural and social diversity. It fronts a significant stretch of the River Thames from near to Waterloo Bridge to Greenland dock in the east and stretches to the south through Camberwell and Peckham to beyond Dulwich. The redevelopment of the housing estates at Elephant and Castle is evidence of the rapid progression.
The Council is determined to continue the regeneration of the Borough and central is the commitment to build more Council homes. Many of these will be sited in the areas around Old Kent Road and Canada Water which have both been designated by the Mayor as Opportunity Areas and this has led to significant development proposals.
About Southwark:
We are the largest local authority social landlord in London, managing 55,000 homes lived in by 40% of Southwark’s residents. We are home to over 18,300 businesses including iconic London venues and social enterprises and we have a young, diverse, and growing population.
At Southwark we are committed to making our borough just and fair and are taking positive action to tackle inequalities. Our residents and communities are our greatest asset and the passion we have for Southwark is shared by millions of Londoners who enjoy our outstanding cultural offer, use our hospitals and attend our universities. Our refreshed borough plan and focus on Southwark Stands Together, (which is our work with Southwark’s communities and the council’s staff to tackle racism, injustice and inequality) underpins all that we do.
About You:
We now have a vacancy for a Legal Assistant. Working closely with our planning and property lawyers, you will have the opportunity to work on some landmark regeneration schemes (which have in the past few years included six CPO inquiries), planning agreements, highways agreements and enforcement matters. The property work will involve title investigation and a range of landlord and tenant issues such as granting new commercial leases, lease renewals, deeds of variation, deeds of surrender, licences and rent reviews.
This is a full-time permanent role. You will have experience of working in a legal environment in the UK and will have either a law degree or equivalent.
The role is based at the Council’s offices at Tooley Street, which is a very short distance from London Bridge Station. If you would enjoy the challenge of working for a highly progressive Borough in the heart of London then please apply online expressing your interest and showing how you are able to meet the criteria set out in the job specification.
