The Internship Programme at Southwark
Now more than ever, the young people of Southwark need support to help them access employment that reflects their ambitions and hard work.
Our paid internships are aimed at creating positive futures for young residents aged 16-24, who need help to get on the career ladder.
We’ve committed to paying our interns the Living Wage as a minimum, currently set at £10.75 per hour.
Internships can last anywhere between 6 -12 weeks and are all across our council departments.

About the Opportunity at Southwark
Join as an intern in our Mental Health Reablement Team, which is a social care team who assess and provide support to adults aged 18-64, who may require social services support due to having a mental health issue. The team is made up of 14 staff, including business administration staff.
This is a well rounded opportunity to gain essential business support skills, whilst helping people in our community.
This Internship will last for 6 weeks and we have one placement available - at the moment we expect this to begin in late September/October 2020.
You will be acting in a vital business support role for the Mental Health Team. We're looking for someone who is excited to gain skills in the following areas:
- Taking and distributing team meeting minutes.
- Answering our duty phone line and forwarding on calls as appropriate.
- Help on reception.
- Room Bookings.
- Manage the diaries of staff members.
- Work on a database.
- Create reports.
- Using Outlook, Word and Excel programmes.
- Learning how to work with and handle sensitive information.
About You
Here are some key areas we look for:
- An understanding of Equality & Diversity, Health & Safety and Confidentiality.
- An understanding of what is required around timekeeping, attendance and conduct in the workplace.
- Working efficiently and effectively with customers and or peers.
- Working flexibly as part of a team.
- Ability to organise and prioritise own workload.
You’ll also be comfortable speaking with people as this internship is forward facing and will include communicating with other professionals outside of Southwark Council, as well as with service users who have mental health issues.
