The role
About Southwark:
At Southwark Council we are proud of our Libraries and Heritage service. Our award winning libraries are some of the busiest in London, we have a dedicated team of staff, and an events programme focused on community need. Our new heritage centre will help increase our audience reach and add to our already popular offer at our public archives service. The transformation of Libraries and Heritage is intended to ensure that even more people can benefit from the council’s Fairer Future for All policy.
The Role:
We are recruiting for a Heritage Officer to work within the Southwark Archives team. This role provides suitable work experience for postgraduate courses in archives and records management.
You’ll play an important part in all aspects of the heritage service’s work – providing customer service to visitors or researchers on-site and remotely, assisting with digital and social media programmes, exhibitions, and learning and outreach events, developing and presenting the service’s learning and outreach programme, promoting and improving collection management and security, and supporting the service’s wider strategic goals.
About You:
We’re looking for an applicant with a passion for making the past accessible to everyone. To succeed, you will need excellent customer care skills and knowledge of history.
Southwark’s communities are varied, and the service works with a variety of users and stakeholders, so you’ll be comfortable communicating verbally, digitally and in writing, and capable of successfully working with a diversity of audiences.
Your flexibility and organisational skills allow you to work alone or in a team, partner effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders and partners, and meet targets and deadlines effectively. You should also be comfortable taking charge of premises and overseeing volunteer work.
