The Role
The head of Southwark’s award winning Housing Solutions service will be leaving shortly, providing an exciting opportunity for internal staff to apply for an acting up opportunity. Candidates will be acting up for a period of between three and six months, while arrangements are made to recruit to the permanent Head of Housing Solutions.
There are two acting up positions (i) one leading the demand side of the service (see below) and (ii) one leading the supply side of the service (see below).
The Housing Solutions service is a high profile council service. Homelessness and rough sleeping is a scourge which the borough is determined to tackle and attempt to reduce and eventually eliminate. Candidates will need to demonstrate a commitment to doing all they can to achieve this goal through innovation, partnership working and liaison with members.
Decent, affordable housing across London is in short supply and you will need to show considerable imagination in sourcing accommodation for those in housing need.

You will be able to demonstrate:
- significant management experience in managing homelessness services;
- evidence of working with senior officers and members and delivering service change and improvements;
- excellent communication skills, dealing with officers at all levels, councillors and partners;
- experience of partnership building and working with central government, other local authorities and third sector organisations;
- great leadership skills, delivering continuous improvement in the Housing Solutions services whilst inspiring and motivating your colleagues and teams;
- experience of managing budgets and handling financial pressures and conflicting demands.
You will be leading high performing teams and will be expected to maintain the high levels of service delivery to our customers and seek further improvements.
Service demand includes, homelessness prevention and assessment, the financial inclusion team, the rapid re-housing and rough sleeping team, the private rented sector team, homelessness reviews and the Gateway team.
Service supply includes, assessment of housing applications, re-housing into Housing Association and council homes, private sector procurement and housing choice for vulnerable clients.
