About Southwark:

Southwark is a large, ambitious and progressive council with a ‘can do’ attitude and enviable reputation. As a council, we are successful, passionate and forward-thinking. We are committed to our ‘Fairer Futures for All’ promise which ensures that our residents and businesses are central to everything we do.

Southwark has a varied mix of cultural communities, where over 120 languages are spoken in Southwark. We have all the challenges you'd find in any inner city area.

Southwark is a borough at the forefront of culture so we understand the importance of the services we deliver. Whether that’s providing a lifeline through delivering books to our housebound and elderly, using music and community events to engage with young people or playing an influential role in the development of new cultural centres. We are committed to ensuring residents can access and shape our history and heritage and we particularly want to ensure that the voices of young people are heard.

Our pride in our past never comes at the expense of our future. We have a resolute commitment to our Fairer Futures promise that underpins everything we do. It will be up to you to develop, embed and champion strategic plans to achieve our vision for this promise.

Southwark Council is a Equal Opportunity Employer.

The Role:

Do you share Southwark’s passion for culture, heritage and ensuring that our young people enjoy a bright future? Have you got the vision, skill and leadership qualities to help shape our services so they make a meaningful impact on the quality of our residents lives?

We are looking for a dedicated individual on a one year fixed term basis to drive forward our new vision for youth provision in the borough and to help us protect and shape our proud cultural heritage for future generations, attracting new visitors and businesses alike. As Head of Service – Culture, you will maintain as well as develop the service as a centre of excellence.

The role is responsible for the following service areas: libraries, heritage, culture, arts, events and youth services.

About You:

This role requires an experienced and passionate leader with a track record of managing at a senior level, experience of these service areas and in-depth knowledge of change management.

Additional Details:

The salary for this post ranges from £76,074 to £95,700 per annum. This post attracts an additional financial JNC benefits package of £3,503 per annum (pro-rata April to March and reviewed annually).

The vacancy is offered as a Fixed Term Contract for 1 year. We advise any internal staff to gain agreement from your substantive line manager if considering this as a secondment opportunity.

The role includes, as a top priority, the implementation of a exciting new approach to services for young people, putting young people's voices at the heart of delivery. The role will require energy and determination to move this forward. Whilst experience of youth work is not essential, a passion for ensuring young people enjoy a positive future will be.
