The role

We are looking for 2:1 or above Graduates to join our Graduate Finance Training Programme, who are forward thinking, influential and able to make a real impact in the workplace. We need ambitious, highly committed people who want to become an expert in public sector finance and help make a real difference for the benefit of our communities.

Southwark’s Graduate Finance Training programme allows you to develop the practical and strategic skills required to become a public finance professional. As a finance trainee, you will have a programme of work based support and placement rotations, whilst studying for the internationally respected Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy (CIPFA) professional qualification, which will provide you with the experience and knowledge you need to become a future finance manager.

Based in the heart of London Bridge, Southwark Council has a high success rate in producing fully qualified CIPFA accountants. During the training programme, you will be given the opportunity to experience a range of specialist placements within:

 Housing and Modernisation
 Finance and Governance
 Children’s and Adults’ Services
 Environment and Leisure
 Chief Executive's Office

The finance function within Southwark Council plays a crucial role in our ambitious regeneration plans, supporting service delivery and achieving the aims of the council’s strategy, through helping to administer the c.£270m annual revenue budget and £680m 10 year capital programme. Finance is at the heart of the decision making process.

We are looking for a person who has strong numeric, written, oral and presentation skills and the ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences. You will also have knowledge of the public sector (and local government in particular) and an awareness of key issues relating to the work of the public sector.

You will need to be able to start at Southwark Council by 7th September 2020.

Additional salary details

Grade: 7 starting, increasing to 10
Salary: £26,772 starting, increasing to £36,486

The post holder is required to study for and achieve the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) professional qualification upon completion of exams at the first attempt (Fully paid CIPFA course fees).

Completing of exams will allow for an increase in grade and salary.
Please note this role is a 3 year FTC, reviewed annually pending completion of exams.
