What does a Fleet Engineer do at Southwark Council?

As a Fleet Engineer, you will provide technical expertise and strategic oversight to maintain and improve Southwark’s commercial fleet. You will be responsible for ensuring all vehicles are roadworthy, compliant with Department for Transport regulations, and aligned with our environmental and sustainability goals.

Your work will directly support key council services, including waste collection, street cleaning, and maintenance teams, ensuring they have the reliable vehicles they need to serve the community effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Expert Guidance: Provide professional advice on fleet suitability, optimisation strategies, and sustainable vehicle options.

  • Compliance & Safety: Develop and implement policies to maintain fleet roadworthiness and regulatory compliance.

  • Vehicle Procurement & Management: Oversee the acquisition of vehicles, ensuring cost-effectiveness and adherence to legal and environmental requirements.

  • Performance Monitoring: Use data and telemetry to track vehicle efficiency, driver behaviours, and operational trends.

  • Contractor Oversight: Manage supplier relationships, ensuring top performance and compliance with contracts.

  • Reporting & Analysis: Produce and present reports on fleet performance, insurance trends, and compliance issues to senior management.

  • O-License Protection: Ensure adherence to licensing regulations, scheduling services, and providing insurance guidance to senior officers.

  • Sustainability Focus: Support the council’s commitment to reducing emissions by integrating alternative fuel policies into fleet operations.

About You

We are looking for a detail-oriented and proactive Fleet Engineer with a strong technical background and excellent organisational skills. You’ll be a problem-solver, capable of identifying opportunities for efficiency and innovation while ensuring the highest standards of compliance and service delivery.
