The Role

Working as part of the transport projects team you will be responsible for designing and implementing highways projects. Normal duties will include producing complete design packages and then seeing these through to successful completion on site for a number of highway schemes, with a particular focus on walking and cycling improvements.

You will be expected to be proficient in the use of design software, familiar with current UK standards for highway design and be supervising the construction of projects on site. The successful candidate will have a good eye for detail and be able to find solutions to the challenges of carrying out improvements in a densely populated urban environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guide the delivery a programme of highways projects through from design to implementation
  • Prepare design packages for a range of small projects and management of contractors
  • Prepare and monitor budgets and effectively manage the team’s finances
  • Keep abreast of best practice and policies in highway and traffic engineering
  • Liaise with other bodies and in doing so to establish working relationships that will facilitate the securing of future funding and backing of development projects/initiatives
  • Maintain a customer focus, liaising with users, other Departments and external agencies to ensure that the services provide best value and meet the needs and preferences of existing and potential users
  • Develop and manages review processes of the Unit’s service provision

Additional details

Required Skills and Experience:

  • A degree in a relevant engineering discipline subject or relevant professional qualification
  • A detailed understanding of how services are provided in a local government context
  • An understanding of the current legislative context for a Highway Authority and its statutory powers and responsibilities
  • A thorough understanding of engineering principles and the management of the delivery of highways engineering projects
