Join Our Team as an Environment Enforcement Officer at Southwark Council!

Environmental Enforcement is a key priority for Southwark. We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Environment Enforcement Officers to help deliver our service to our residents. You will collaborate with colleagues in waste, housing, community safety and external partners, such as the police and community groups, to create lasting change.

As an Environment Enforcement Officer, you’ll respond to public and enquiries about littering, waste management, fly-tipping and other enviro-crime issues; investigating reports of offences and taking enforcement action where necessary. Your work will include addressing issues environmental crimes, and ensuring offenders are held accountable working proactively to prevent future violations.
Our overarching aim is enforcement, problem-solving, behavioural change and community engagement.

Skills and Experience Required:

To be successful in this role, you will need:
•    Knowledge and Experience: Experience in environmental crime enforcement. You should have a solid understanding of local authority regulations and enforcement, with the ability to interpret legislation, identify non-compliance, and take appropriate enforcement action. Experience in providing advice and guidance on environmental crime is essential.
•    Investigative Skills: Strong investigative skills to assess reports of offences and gather evidence for potential prosecutions. You should be comfortable working in a high-visibility role and responding to complaints while maintaining professionalism and managing conflict.
•    Leadership & Collaboration: Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, collaborating with key stakeholders including the police, local authorities, and community partners. You’ll be expected to manage a caseload and work towards set targets, all while maintaining a high level of customer care.
•    Personal Attributes: You must commit to fairness, equality, and diversity, and be able to engage effectively with diverse communities. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work under pressure are also key to this role.

Additional details

This is a 2 years Fixed term contract 

The post holder will be required to work in any area of the Borough and a varied shift pattern including weekends and public holidays
