The Role
As the Ecology Officer - Climate Change, within the wider Parks and Natural Environment Team, you will be responsible for taking a leading role in formulating and implementing the Council’s unprecedented investment in ecological and biodiversity improvement projects associated with Southwark’s Climate Change Action Plan over a two-year period.
In addition you will support the Ecology Officer and Parks and Natural Environment Team by advising and representing the Council on matters relating to ecology and biodiversity, keeping up-to-date with all relevant legislation, developments and trends within the nature conservation industry to deliver various improvement projects and support in the continuous improvement of the service.
Key priorities include:
- Develop, consult, procure and manage a range of diverse ecological improvement projects working with cross council colleagues, third sector partners, stakeholder groups and members of the public.
- Work with cross-council teams to respond to the climate emergency, driving further improvement across the service.
- Developing, enhancing and promoting community-based projects and sourcing potential funding streams
- Lead on the development of communication plans promoting ecological projects borough-wide
- Support and monitor environmental and ecology contracts and support the Southwark Biodiversity Partnership.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of strategies for the management of ecology and biodiversity, deliver the Council’s Biodiversity Action Plan, and contribute to strategies and deliver targets associated with the Council Delivery Plan and Climate Change Action Plan.
- Develop a range of environmental volunteer opportunities related to ecology and tree planting, monitor the volunteering programme with meaningful key performance indicators.
- Monitor and advise on the management of all 80 Sites of Importance for Nature (SINC) in Southwark.

Additional Information
- This is a 2 year fixed term position
- Standard 36 hours Monday to Friday, the post holder may be required to work outside of normal working hours to meet the needs of the service
- The post holder may also be required to work in other operational areas to meet the needs of the service.
- The employment is subject to a probationary period of twenty six weeks from your start date of employment with Southwark Council, during which time you will be required to demonstrate to the council’s satisfaction your suitability for the position in which you are employed.
