The role

The Roles:

Southwark Council is looking to recruit 2 Divisional Accountants, one within the Children and Families Finance team and one within the Education Finance team.

Divisional Accountant – Children and Families

This is an interesting and varied position working within one of London’s most exciting and dynamic boroughs. The main purpose of your role will be to provide management accounting support to the Children and Families service within Southwark Council. It will include responsibilities such as providing financial and budgetary advice to budget holders, monthly forecasting, compiling of monthly financial reports, involvement in closing the accounts, updating the budget for the service area you support, deputising for the Senior Finance Manager and might involve managing one member of staff.

Divisional Accountant – Education

This is an engaging and exciting position working within one of London’s most exciting and dynamic boroughs. The main purpose of your role will be to provide management accounting support to the Education service within Southwark Council. Responsibilities will be very similar to those as described for the Children and Families post, but budgets will cover both General Fund and Dedicated Schools Grant (DSG) funding sources.

Requirements

It is preferred that you are fully or part qualified in a professional finance qualification such as CIPFA, ACA, CIMA or ACCA and have relevant experience, but as long as you have at least one of these two requirements, you may apply. It is assumed that you are IT literate and have sound knowledge of Excel.

About Southwark

We are the largest local authority social landlord in London, managing 55,000 homes lived in by 40% of Southwark’s residents. We are home to over 18,300 businesses including iconic London venues and social enterprises and we have a young, diverse, and growing population.

At Southwark we are committed to making our borough just and fair and are taking positive action to tackle inequalities.  Our residents and communities are our greatest asset and the passion we have for Southwark is shared by millions of Londoners who enjoy our outstanding cultural offer, use our hospitals and attend our universities. Our refreshed borough plan and focus on Southwark Stands Together, (which is our work with Southwark’s communities and the council’s staff to tackle racism, injustice and inequality) underpins all that we do.

About you

We want only the best for Southwark and ideally we are seeking a qualified accountant with relevant experience. You will have sound financial experience, preferably within local government in similar roles. You will work closely with the service in order to understand their needs and help support them to increase their understanding of their budgetary and other financial responsibilities, which in turn will help with the Council’s savings targets and its aim of strong financial management. We would like someone with a good dose of common sense and the ability to strive to continuously improve the work they are responsible for.

Flexible working

Although Southwark Council supports a flexible working environment for staff, the minimum requirement at the moment is that a member of staff is physically present at our offices in Tooley Street, London for (at least) two days a week.
