The role
The Deputy Head of Law (Communities) will have responsibility for a team of Lawyers undertaking the following areas of practice:
- Housing
- Litigation
- Protecting Children and Vulnerable Adults
- Prosecutions, Regulatory and Licensing
- Employment and Education
Your Role
We are looking for an experienced lawyer who is a technical expert that will work closely with a range of senior officers across the council, be the main legal adviser to Scrutiny and our commissions, attend our Audit, Governance & Standards Committee, and Cabinet and Council Assembly when required. You will also be required to undertake Code of Conduct investigations and deputise for the Monitoring Officer. You must have significant experience of advising Members and senior officers at committee and working with Members.
You will head a team of lawyers providing high quality legal support to the Council and be responsible for some high profile and transformational projects.
Your skills and experience
You will have a background in advising on complex matters in any of the following areas: housing, litigation, the protection of vulnerable children and adults, employment, education, prosecutions and licensing.
You will need to be politically astute and aware of the impact your advice could have for both the Council and the communities we serve. This means you will need the ability to develop good working relationships with people across the Council and to explain complex legal concepts clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. You will have led and motivated a team of lawyers and you will also have experience of financial management.

This role attracts JNC benefits to the value of £3503 per annum, this is a cash payment.
