The role

This post is for a fixed term 6 months Acting Consultant or Locum Consultant (with potential to extend for a further 6 months).

As Consultant in Public Health you will lead and manage the development of public health strategies, the delivery of the healthy places and health improvement programmes (including NHS health checks & healthy weight) and key aspects of Southwark’s Outbreak Prevention Control Plan. This will include responsibility for the development, implementation and delivery of national, pan London and local policies, developing inter-agency and inter-disciplinary short term and long term strategic plans and programmes for public health with delegated Board or organisational authority to deliver key public health targets.

To be successful in the role you will:

- raise partners’ awareness of their public health responsibilities, to promote joint working and to influence partners’ public health policy decisions.
- provide expert public health advice and leadership to support, inform and influence an evidence based approach within ethical frameworks for commissioning and developing high quality equitable services across primary, secondary and social care and across sectors including GLA, Metropolitan Police, Voluntary sector, academic departments.
- develop and utilise information and intelligence systems to underpin public health action and strategy development across disciplines and organisations, leading the collation and interpretation of relevant data.
- lead a team of staff and design and deliver a training programme as a major part of the job e.g.: training specialist registrars in public health on the public health training scheme
- lead on public health research and innovation to deliver service transformation to improve health outcomes and deliver on public health targets, translating research findings into the development of public health policy and practice as relevant to their lead area.
- Lead on complex public health issues, advise the Health and Wellbeing board, Cabinet, CCG and other relevant bodies and make recommendations regarding service configuration, prevention, patient care and inequalities. They will be key in enabling the development of long term strategies to improve service redesign and outcomes across the local authority and with partners including NHS, Kings College London, Southbank University, and the voluntary sector and at regional and national levels including Greater London Assembly (GLA), Department of Health, Home Office and National Institute for Health Protection (NIHP).

We are looking for someone with the following skills, knowledge and experience:

- Inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List/UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists
- If included in the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List in a specialty other than public health medicine/dental public health, candidates must have equivalent training and/or appropriate experience of public health practice
- Public health specialist registrar and specialist trainee applicants who are not yet on the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List in dental public health/UKPHR must provide verifiable signed documentary evidence that they are within 12 months of gaining entry at the date of interview; all other applicants must provide verifiable signed documentary evidence that they have applied for inclusion in the GMC/GDC/UKPHR specialist registers
- Applicants must meet minimum CPD requirements (i.e. be up to date) in accordance with Faculty of Public Health requirements or other recognised body
- Project and budget management skills
- High level of understanding of epidemiology and statistics, public health practice, health promotion, health economics and health care evaluation.
