The Role

About Southwark Public Health Division:

Southwark has seen great improvements in overall health over the last 50 years, but we still have many health inequalities to address. Your ingenuity, innovation and expertise will be critical at this exciting but challenging time.

The public health division is at the centre of driving forward an exciting whole systems programme of change in Southwark. We serve a demographically young and ethnically diverse resident population of 314,000. Our aim is to provide better health services, improve health and well-being, and reduce health inequalities across the boroughs.

About the role:

You’ll lead and manage an established team which brings together our programmes on behavioural health (tobacco, alcohol and drugs, HIV, sexual and reproductive health, mental health, loneliness and isolation), digital public health and PH commissioning. You'll advise on knowledge, standards and practice across the full spectrum of public health. In particular you'll lead the development and implementation of long-term strategies to ensure sustainable public health improvements. Expect to be involved in intelligence gathering, as well as surveillance and assessment of the population's health and wellbeing. Meanwhile, assessments of evidence of the effectiveness of health and healthcare interventions, programmes and services will be key. There are also opportunities to pursue academic links and carry out research and development.

Working closely with senior management, you'll forge strong relationships across the Council and with Southwark clinical commissioning group, local NHS Trusts, the police, the Department of Heath, Public Health England, GLA, and a range of voluntary sector organisations.

About You:

You'll have the expertise and leadership skills to deal with complex public health issues, and to advise on related Council and healthcare commissioning and service improvement, behavioural change and digital public health. Flexibility and stamina will be essential to meet multiple, changing demands and tight deadlines. You will also need a high level of intellectual rigour and strong negotiation skills. Tact, diplomacy and an understanding of different cultures, combined with the ability to inspire and motivate others, will enable you to work effectively across organisational boundaries and to influence where you have no official authority.

Holding a relevant degree in an area such as medicine, nursing, clinical psychology, or pharmacology you will have completed specialist training defined by the Faculty of Public Health (FPH). Along with an analytical approach and a commitment to improving public health, you'll have good communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
