The role

About Southwark: Southwark is a large, ambitious and progressive council with a ‘can do’ attitude and enviable reputation. As a Council, we are successful, passionate and forward-thinking. We are committed to our ‘Fairer Futures for All’ promise which ensures that our residents and businesses are central to everything we do. If you want to make a difference at a local level, apply to Southwark Council today.

The Role:

This permanent role is based within the council’s Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) and is accountable to the Unit Manager.  The team is responsible for the commissioning of Public Health funded drug and alcohol treatment services for residents of all ages in Southwark as well as  street outreach services for rough sleepers and provides local leadership for the implementation of the national Drug Strategy.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in the substance misuse field following the publication of the UK Government’s new Drug Strategy in December 2021, which commits the whole of government and public services to come together and share responsibility for combating illegal drug use and its harms and to turn the tide on the demand for drugs.

The post-holder will be responsible for delivering against a range of drug and alcohol priorities that may change and evolve over time. Priorities for the post-holder in 2022-23 may include adults, children and young people, parents and families, criminal justice, substance related death and projects arising from new investment.

The role will involve effective collaborative working with colleagues across the council and a range of partners and stakeholders including elected members, criminal justice agencies, health and people of all ages with lived experience of substance related harm.

About You:

You will have a working knowledge and experience of the drug and alcohol sector, including proven experience of successful commissioning and partnership working to improve outcomes for people, and an awareness of the issues faced by local communities affected by substance related harm.

You must have excellent analytical, commissioning, communication, partnership and report writing skills.

You will be organised and adept at working within a reactive environment. Working in a complex, challenging, fast paced, political environment within a high harm, high volume borough, the focus is upon the delivery and management of multiple work programmes and projects to high expectations within tight timescales.

A strong commitment to improving outcomes and tackling health inequalities for people and communities in Southwark affected by substance related harm is essential. At the heart of the team is a shared commitment to act in the best interests of residents and communities affected by these issues and to ensure we take all opportunities available to hear and represent the voices and views of local people with lived experience in the delivery of our work programme.
