Salary range:
The salary range for this position is:£40,005 - £46,053
The Role:
We have an exciting opportunity to join the expanding Leader’s Office and Cabinet’s Office in a central role at the heart of the key decision-making in the council.
The purpose of our team is to advise and support the Leader and the Cabinet. We work in a fast-paced and politically sensitive division, connecting politicians to senior officers as they deliver Southwark’s ambitions.
By joining our team, you will be contributing to delivering tangible results in the heart of London. Southwark have the largest council home programme, having over 3,000 homes built or under construction in the last year and directly managing over 55,000 homes in the borough. We are leading the way in access to mental health services, investing over £35m in cost-of-living support for our residents and providing free school meals to primary and secondary school children.
As Cabinet Advisor, you will advise two or more members of Cabinet and Deputy Cabinet, working closely with them to ensure they deliver their portfolio objectives. You help us work with senior officers across the organisation, local and national partnerships, government and think tanks to shape and build on our national leading policy platform and deliver on the commitments we have made to residents.
About You:
By working in the Leader’s Office and Cabinet Office, you will get a special insight into how different parts of the council work together to make key decisions and deliver for residents. You will be involved in this by seeing the bigger picture, thinking strategically into the long term and responding to challenges as they emerge week-to-week. You will be working with a driven and ambitious team within the Leader’s Office and Cabinet Office to action this. There will also be opportunities to lead national work, managing relationships with politicians, senior leaders across the organisation, government, think tanks and local and national partnerships.
As an advisor to several Cabinet members, you will have opportunities to think creatively about how to progress and promote their portfolios. This includes drafting proactive content, reactive media responses and building the effectiveness of the Cabinet’s online communications channels. You are a confident communicator with strong organisational and prioritisation skills to ensure members are using their time effectively to deliver on their objectives, provide political leadership for the council and fulfil their constitutional responsibilities.
Above all, you will be attending and participating in high-level meetings that seek to change lives and reduce inequality. You are someone who enjoys the variety that comes from working in a political environment and can clearly demonstrate the utmost discretion and understanding of political sensitivities.
