The role

About Southwark:

We are the largest local authority social landlord in London, managing 55,000 homes lived in by 40% of Southwark’s residents. We are home to over 18,300 businesses including iconic London venues and social enterprises and we have a young, diverse and growing population.

At Southwark we are committed to making our borough just and fair and are taking positive action to tackle inequalities.  Our residents and communities are our greatest asset and the passion we have for Southwark is shared by millions of Londoners who enjoy our outstanding cultural offer, use our hospitals and attend our universities. Our refreshed borough plan and focus on Southwark Stands Together, (which is our work with Southwark’s communities and the council’s staff to tackle racism, injustice and inequality) underpins all that we do.

Lead a Life-Changing Volunteer Project in Southwark and Lambeth!

Are you ready to make a real difference in your community? Do you have the passion and drive to lead a volunteer project that directly impacts the lives of vulnerable individuals? If so, this is your opportunity to step into a pivotal role where every day brings new challenges and rewards.

About the Team

Become a key player in the Southwark Youth Justice Service (YJS), where we are on the frontline of supporting children and vulnerable adults at their most critical moments. Our Appropriate Adult (AA) Service is a volunteer-driven initiative that ensures those in police custody are treated with the care and respect they deserve. With our forthcoming expansion into Lambeth, we will grow our impact and strengthen our partnerships with police, social services, and local communities. As part of a dedicated and passionate team, you will work closely with the Metropolitan Police, Out of Hours Teams, and children’s and adults’ services across both boroughs, ensuring that our mission of care and advocacy reaches even further.

About the Role

We’re looking for an inspiring and driven Appropriate Adult Manager to lead our volunteer project for the next 12 months. This role is about more than just managing a service—it's about empowering a team of around 80 volunteers who make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable people. As the AA Manager, you’ll oversee the recruitment, training, and development of volunteers, ensuring that they are fully equipped to provide the best support in Southwark and Lambeth police stations. You’ll be at the forefront of expanding our service into Lambeth, working hand-in-hand with the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) to build strong relationships and set up vital data systems. This role offers a unique blend of leadership, strategic planning, and hands-on management, making it an ideal opportunity for someone looking to take their career to the next level.

About You

You are a natural leader with a passion for social justice and a knack for volunteer management. You bring experience in project management and a solid understanding of the youth justice system, but what sets you apart is your ability to inspire and motivate others. In this role, your curiosity, enthusiasm, and commitment to learning will be your greatest assets as you lead a team that makes a real difference every day. If you are looking for a role that challenges you, offers growth, and gives you the chance to have a lasting impact on your community, we want to hear from you. We welcome applicants seeking a 12-month secondment or a fixed-term contract.
