The Role
This is an excellent opportunity to broaden your knowledge and skills working in our large, Lexcel-accredited Legal Team which plays a crucial role in supporting the council’s objectives by providing the full range and variety of expert services across all areas of the Council’s work.
The successful applicant will be expected to undertake litigation and provide advice on a range of matters related to adults and children social care, excluding child care proceedings.
The role will include providing advice about the local authority’s powers and duties in relation to children and adults with no recourse to public funds, information sharing with the police in the context of criminal investigations and prosecutions, and advice in relation to the operation of the Care Act, Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act including deprivation of liberty. In addition to the above, you will provide advice in relation to age assessments, young people leaving care, the provision of s20 Children Act support, and the services to be provided to children with disabilities. Case work will include judicial review and Court of Protection litigation, as well as litigation in the county court concerning social care functions under the Mental Health Act and undertaking work in the coroner's court.
In addition to the above, you will be providing advice on Education law and policy. In particular on school admissions and exclusions, primary school and nursery closures, budgets and finance, re-organisations and Judicial Review litigation.

About You
- You will be an admitted solicitor of England and Wales or a Barrister called to the bar of England and Wales or a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives with at least 3 years post qualification experience.
- You will have at least 2 years of experience in providing advice and litigation services to departments supporting vulnerable adults and children, with knowledge of education law an advantage.
- You will work with other lawyers in the adult social care team to provide advice to the client department, as well as working with lawyers in other legal teams on cross-cutting issues.
- You will have to conduct a varied caseload that you will be able to manage with minimal day-to-day supervision, although you will be fully supported by the Senior lawyer.

This role attracts a market factor payment of 5% of salary + hard-to-fill payment of £2,327 package which can be redeemed against gym membership, health insurance, season ticket purchase, bicycle purchase, additional voluntary contribution to pension, subscription, and professional fees.
