Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

The aim of this site is to raise awareness of events that are taking place to celebrate a variety of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion dates that are taking place throughout the year.


On a regular basis this webpage will be updated so staff without access to the Source can find out what is happening and when.

Colleagues can also access content that is shared via email or Yammer by clicking on the different sections below. This webpage can also be accessed via a personal mobile phone or another electronic device.


National Inclusion Week 2021, 27 September to 3 October

National Inclusion Week takes place annually to celebrate diversity whilst promoting the importance of equality within the workplace. The theme for this year is #UnitedForInclusion and seeks to encourage unity between people, organisations and businesses.

The council will be marking this occasion with a week-long series of virtual events, seminars and interactive discussion forums that will focus on providing information, celebrating inclusivity whilst continuing to motivate all employees to work together by uniting to share learning, best practices and to encourage open conversations.

World Mental Health Day 2021, 10 October

World Mental Health Day on the 10th October is an opportunity to recognise the role that inequality can play in mental ill health.

  • Positive Action briefing sessions
    Thursday 28 October 1pm to 2pm


    The final two lunch and learn briefing sessions on positive action will be taking place in response to feedback from the SST solution focussed conversations and also focus groups and employees.  We have committed to using Positive Action to improve under representation and access to opportunities, such as, how we can use Positive Action to increase the number of Black, Asian and minority ethnic employees in grade 14 and above.

  • Career Conversation event
    Thursday 21 October 12pm to 1.30pm


    Melanie Medley, Director of Employee Experience(interim) will be facilitating this event with an external guest, Samson DeAlyn, a senior director from LearningWorkz.  Samson will be sharing his career journey and personal experiences during this event.
    This event is open to all staff and will include a question and answer session.

  • Representation Matters - Proud to Be Me
    Monday 25 October 12pm to 1.30pm

    A panel event led by Melanie Medley, Director of Employee Experience(interim) with other women in senior leadership roles. They will discuss the importance of understanding why diversity is needed at senior levels within an organisation, their current challenges and how they navigated the glass ceiling whilst balancing their professional and personal lives.
    This event is open to all staff and will include a question and answer session.

  • Coaching and Mentoring opportunities
    Wednesday 27 October 12pm to 1pm


    As part of the SST Programme we will be offering a range of opportunities for Black, Asian and minority ethnic employees to receive coaching or mentoring. This includes mentoring. Come along to this lunch and learn session to learn more. Tashoy Ashley, Delivery Lead for the SST Corporate Training Programme will be facilitating this event.

  • This 90-minute workshop will focus on race and resilience and istargeted at our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic colleagues. The event willexplore a range of topics that contribute to individuals being their authenticself at work and building the resilience needed for career success. Theworkshop objectives are to:

    Explore theconcepts of everyday discrimination micro-aggressions and weathering.

Our external EDI consultant, David Weaver, will be facilitating thisevent that will outline the practical strategies, tactics and tools thatparticipants can implement to empower themselves.   • Arif Sain will be leading this session which will focus on what steps individuals can take if they do not feel confident enough to engage in conversations around race and racism. Arif will be looking at some of the key concepts to help build participants’ confidence to start conversations that can lead to change.   • Thursday 28 October 2 - 3.30pm


    Stephen Gaskell will be leading an engaging and informative event which will include representatives from the different workstreams. Each workstream lead will share a case study in relation to their specific area and participants will then be asked to provide feedback. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions during the Q&A session at the end. This event is open to all staff.
